Caregiver Cruise 2017

Caregiver Cruise

We cruised to Bermuda, June 3-8, 2017!

In Bermuda, our participants and caregivers enjoyed a glass bottom boat tour, visiting the pink sands of Horseshoe Bay, viewing the beautiful coastline from the Fantasea Sightseeing Boat tour, and exploring the city of Hamilton. We also had some time for shopping, sampling rum cake, and of course a little eating and drinking at the Frog and Onion Pub!

We took advantage of all the amenities on the Anthem of the Seas as well. Several participants were selected to participate in a jewelry fashion show, many raced in bumper cars, enjoyed a wine tasting, and took in evening shows at the theater. Joel and Christi, the Insight staff members on the cruise, were the only ones brave enough to try out the roller skating  rink!

While everyone enjoyed all the sights and attractions, many said the best part of the cruise was the company and the support.

Check Out What We Did!

We made daily posts here with trip highlights and excursions so you can feel like you've cruised along with us!
We departed from New Jersey on Saturday, June 3rd, traveling to King's Wharf, Bermuda, and returned on Thursday, June 8th.

Day 2: Hijinks and High Fashion on the High Seas

Day 2: Hijinks and High Fashion on the High Seas

June 4, 2017

Day two was off to a beautiful start as it was a gorgeous day to be on the ocean! Not a cloud in the sky and the temperature in the high 70’s – we could not have asked for a better day!

Today was our first full day at sea. Christi and Joel had a lot planned for the group, but alas, the group opted to sleep in and nap throughout the day; again leaving Joel and Christi to their own devices! Jack slept in and greeted the group with his “morning hair”, JD was snug as a bug in a rug during his afternoon nap, and Christi took such a good power nap, she woke up with drool down both sides of her mouth! See what the ocean air does to you!

But, the day was not all about napping! The group had a casual breakfast in the trusty Windjammer and ended up sharing their stories of being a caregiver and how they made it (and are still) making it through day to day. Shirley shared her story about how her late husband Frank had left their house one evening and a group of college kids down the block (who were having a late night party) brought Frank back home – not only once, but twice and gave him a Bud Light! Tears and laughter were shared and it really gave everyone a sense that they were not in this journey alone.

Christi and Joel left an open invitation for the group to take advantage of Roller Skating, but alas, Joel and Christi were the only ones brave enough to get into the rink! Luckily, they made it out without any incidents (although Joel did almost fall once and nearly took Christi down with him!).

Late in the morning, Joel and Christi suspected the group may be napping as the “trivia team” was rather light for our daily morning trivia in the Schooner Bar!

Lunch time!! The group opted to take advantage of the local pizzeria on the Royal Esplanade. Everything from regular cheese, to pepperoni, and even chicken and potato pizza was there for the sampling! In addition, they had some lighter fare such as caprese salad, prosciutto and melon, and roasted pesto tomato (just in case you were trying to resist the carbs!). And of course, right next door was the Pastry Shop full of sweet treats.

As we rolled through lunch, some of our lucky cruisers were selected to be part of the afternoon Fashion Show – showcasing some of the jewelry from the shops on board. Christi, Sophie, Sarah, Jack, and Gretel were all runway models for the afternoon! They were not only treated to full on hair and makeup, but also facials and champagne! (Keep in mind, this was the second helping of Champagne as directly after lunch, the group visited the Champagne Art Auction – mainly to get the champagne, not the art!). They did a lovely job on the runway and JD even gave his lovely wife Gretel a kiss as she did her little turn on the catwalk (#rightsaidfred).

Keeping in trend with the theme of “high fashion” it was Captain’s Night here on the Anthem of the Seas. Everyone donned their very best (JD even put on his snazzy Tuxedo) and we all got our formal pictures taken and enjoyed a lovely dinner (and learned all about our server – Omega!). After dinner, we all gathered for a group portrait on the main staircase and the runway models were surprised with a little gift bag (Tequila!) for their participation in the show. We think the group has officially decided that tomorrow may involve a tequila tasting! Stay tuned!

After dinner we headed to the Theater for the first show of the cruise. So….the show was entitled “The Gift.” Royal Caribbean usually puts on quality shows, and for the most part, everyone really enjoys them. Well….even Royal Caribbean can’t hit a home run every time. After the show, one of the group members said “So, that was called ‘The Gift’, huh? Well, they should call it ‘The Gift You Want To Exchange!’” Everyone bonded over the perplexing show and are confident this was a misstep and tomorrow’s show will be fabulous!

As tonight was a late show, and most folks are arising early for the Character Breakfast tomorrow morning, most everyone headed to bed; leaving Joel and Christi to their own devices! They opted to take in the “Cabaret Sing-Along” in the Schooner Bar. We will give you one guess as to who was singing along and who was not! (Hint: check out the picture!)

Ultimately, it was a great first day at sea and tomorrow is our first day in Bermuda. Joel and Christi have excursions and a full day planned for everyone! We are looking forward to seeing the beautiful pink sand beaches of Bermuda and enjoying the sights!

Fun fact: each elevator has a picture of some different animal that they have dressed up! Our goal is to get a picture of each group member in each elevator throughout the ship! I think we are up to 5!
