Celebrating Earth Day with Blooms and Butterflies!

This Earth Day, our Day Center participants got hands on the best way possible—by preparing our garden beds with a fresh set of plants, generously donated by Lowe’s. We also were preparing our garden space for some special guests we have been learning about - butterflies!

Over the course of several weeks, we raised Painted Lady butterflies, watching them grow from tiny caterpillars into chrysalises, and now into fully formed butterflies. It was an amazing process to witness up close, and we were so excited to have them almost ready for their big debut.

Finally, we released the butterflies into our freshly planted garden. Watching them take flight and settle among the flowers was a perfect way to wrap up our Earth Day efforts. These new pollinators are already exploring their new home, helping to support the plants and bring even more life to the space.

Thanks again to Lowe’s for their generous donation, and to everyone who helped make this project possible. We’re excited to keep growing!

Spending time outdoors can be beneficial for individuals with dementia - nature offers rich sensory input (smells, sounds, sights) that can stimulate memories and cognition and familiar outdoor settings or garden activities may trigger reminiscence and support emotional well-being. Do you have any favorite memories spent in the garden?
