2025 Loudoun Cares Outstanding Senior Volunteer Award Winner

We are thrilled to announce that Margie Shay, one of our outstanding Sterling Reconnections volunteers, has been awarded the 2025 Loudoun Cares Outstanding Senior Volunteer Award! Margie's selfless nature and compassionate heart shine through in everything she does, making her an invaluable asset to our community!

Margie is a dedicated weekly volunteer at Insight Sterling Reconnections, and she has elevated Tuesdays into a highlight of the week for all participants. Insight’s Reconnections program is for those in the earliest stages of a dementia journey. Each day in Reconnections, small groups participate in discussion groups, recreational therapies, learning experiences, and all have the opportunity for peer support and to socialize in a safe, stigma-free setting. Dementia, a devastating disease, affects each individual uniquely. One person might excel at a math worksheet, only to become disoriented by a word puzzle. Another might effortlessly kick a ball or throw a frisbee, but require the BINGO numbers to be called at a slower pace. Margie possesses a remarkable talent for identifying those in need of help, taking the initiative to offer assistance without drawing attention to the individual's struggles.

More than just an extra set of hands, Margie is a vital component that holds the day together. Her exceptional involvement sets her apart, particularly during the morning reading session of The Daily Chronicle, a daily news brief that highlights historical events, special occasions, and celebrity birthdays. As each new month begins, she meticulously researches that month's chronicles in advance, adding her own unique insights to create an engaging and interactive experience. This level of dedication exemplifies Margie's commitment to making her day truly unforgettable for everyone involved. Her passion and enthusiasm have a profound impact, transforming Tuesdays into a day filled with excitement, discovery, and joy.
