As the population of LGBTQ+ adults continues to age, unique caregiving challenges arise. By 2030, there will be an estimated 7 million LGBTQ+ individuals aged 65 and older. Many of these individuals face distinctive hurdles, including the higher likelihood of not having children and the increased possibility of estrangement from their families of origin.

This virtual class will explore the specific caregiving challenges faced by LGBTQ+ older adults, with a focus on how caregivers can provide the most effective support. Through comprehensive training, technical assistance, and educational resources, we aim to ensure that as our numbers grow, LGBTQ+ older adults receive the care and support they deserve.

Join us to learn more about the unique needs of this community and how you can make a difference in providing care for LGBTQ+ older adults.

Please register and you will receive Zoom information prior to the class.

Presenter
Lisa Householder

Lisa’s path into the world of home-based support services began in her hometown of Pennsylvania, where she dedicated over a decade—1992 to 2008—to caring for her father and aunt. Navigating the complexities of aging alongside her loved ones ignited a profound passion within her to help others in her community. This experience not only opened her eyes to the intricacies of elder care but also fueled her journey toward making a difference in the lives of many.

From 2002 to 2008, Lisa took her passion further by working as a procurement specialist in a skilled nursing community. Her hands-on experience and commitment to quality care laid the groundwork for what would become a pivotal chapter of her life: co-owning a non-medical home care agency. This role allowed her to directly impact the well-being of countless individuals, reinforcing her dedication to service and advocacy.

In 2009, Lisa relocated to Northern Virginia, where she embraced the role of Client Care Director at another non-medical home care agency. However, her entrepreneurial spirit called to her, leading to the launch of Care Connect Nova, LLC in 2022, co-founded with her wife, Sheri. Together, they have created a nurturing environment that focuses on holistic support for families navigating the aging journey.

Lisa’s commitment to advocacy extends beyond her professional life; she actively engages with the Loudoun County Chamber, Senior Resource Partners, and is a proud board member of the Loudoun Senior Network. She embodies the heart of a true community leader, demonstrating that care for others starts with understanding their needs.

In her downtime, Lisa loves tending to her garden, and when she dreams, it’s often of adventures in Costa Rica! Recently, she and Sheri began volunteering for the Upending Parkinson’s program at Sportrock Climbing Center in Sterling, Virginia. They are not just helping participants; they are also embracing their own aging journeys through climbing. At home in Purcellville, Virginia, Lisa shares her life with Sheri, their two dogs, and four loving cats.

"I like the people, the programs, the support, the knowledge I gained as caregiver. That my wife flourished (and was improving, I thought) while she participated."
