As we’re all trying to stay safe and healthy – and cool from the summer heat! – you’ve probably been spending a lot of time indoors. If you feel like you’re running out of things to do, Insight is here to help! We’ll be sharing some ideas each week, adapted from the Best Friends Approach to Care. Some may be more or less appropriate depending on your loved one’s abilities and interests, but if nothing else, here’s to some new things to do this summer!
- Sort poker chips. Sort playing cards. Sort any game items!
If it’s too challenging to play games with the original rules – make up your own! Sort chips by color, cards by suit, or monopoly pieces by which one you like best.
- Look up names in a phone book. Or Facebook!
See if you can find anyone with your last name, a friends’ name, or reminisce about childhood friends.
- Bake cookies.
You can never go wrong with a classic chocolate chip, or try out a new recipe and find a new favorite!
It’s always good to take time to clean. Maybe hit an area of the house you often skip, or see who can make the straightest vacuum lines!
- Read the daily paper aloud.
It’s easy to skim through the headlines, but take time to read a few stories that you might otherwise gloss over. Then talk about something new you learned over dinner!
- Listen to relaxing or favorite music.
It’s always nice to take time to slow down and listen to a favorite song. Turn on your radio, play your loved one’s iPod on headphones, or try a streaming service like Pandora or Spotify to find some old or new favorites!
- Plant seeds.
Order some wildflower seeds, or if it’s too hot, try out an indoor herb kit! If you don’t buy anything new, try your hand at growing new plants from cuttings!
